hurt yourself on purpose

It’s a good practice if you ask me.

I’ll explain why.

So, the average person who would stumble across this blog probably has a day job. This day job may or may not be stressful. Mine has been incredibly so as of late. My small department is one person lighter this week, and that extra workload is no fly in my soup. So I struggle through it and occasionally let out a grumble or sigh, yet, I quickly realize that it is so far from terrible that it’s ridiculous. Because of this, I decide to work the rest of my day with my shoes too tight. Then move my keyboard so that the position of it is so awkward it hurts my back. Then I turn my screens down so that I have to peek under them to barely see what I’m doing, making typing anything legible that much more difficult. If you could imagine it you would see an image much like that of an airline baggage handler stuffed into the tiny hull of an aircraft trying to lift a bag into the uppermost out of reach spot to save room.

I used to do that. Now, my current occupation is much less physically strenuous, in fact, since starting this job i have lost 6 pounds, which, if you knew me, you would be saddened to hear. Yet, this intentional discomfort reminds me that if it weren’t for challenges, life would be more like a nap. It’s important to remember that there are terrible, tragic, egregious walks of life out there. One should not look to ease as a source of happiness, for it never will be.

Punch yourself in the face. Turn off the A/C, turn on the stove, and jog in place. Look like on idiot on purpose. Fart at your job interview. Do not eat ready-made foods. etc.

If you’re prone to getting caught up in the silly idea that your daily grind is somehow important (as I am) then it’s vital, imperative even, that you break loose that stucco shell you live in to make sure you’re still flesh and blood under there.
